The Overview
Seventeen days that begin at two thousand metres in the Ngorongoro highlands and end on a one kilometre island in the Indian Ocean with a nineteenth century lighthouse on it and nobody else on the beach. In between, seven nights in two very different sectors of the Serengeti. It is a long journey and a deliberately simple one: five places, four of them for three nights or more, and only a single transition night in the whole seventeen days.
The Serengeti here is not the standard circuit. The first four nights are in the eastern sector, a corner of the park that was closed to visitors for over twenty years to let the cheetah population recover and only reopened in 2014. It is open, treeless, volcanic country the true short grass Serengeti and the nearest neighbouring camp is more than an hour away. The next three are in the far north on the Mara River, which is a different park again: hills, riverine forest, permanent water, and between roughly July and October the river crossings. Two sectors, seven nights, one short flight between them.
Then the journey drops to sea level and stops moving altogether. Fanjove is the smallest island in the Songo Songo archipelago, a hundred and forty kilometres south of Dar es Salaam, reached by light aircraft to Songo Songo and then by dhow across water that shelves from deep blue to nothing at all. There is one small lodge, an eleven kilometre reef, nesting turtles, and humpback whales passing offshore between roughly July and October. Four nights there is the right ending for a journey that has spent two weeks in the interior not a beach extension bolted on, but the last chapter of the same story, because the ocean is where all of this country eventually drains.

The Mara River crossings are seasonal, typically July to October, and the eastern Serengeti is at its strongest between December and May when the herds move across it; we will advise which sector to weight according to your travel dates. The Songo Songo service operates once daily, so the coastal leg is built around the published schedule.
