The Overview
Almost nobody links these two places, which is the reason to do it. Rubondo Island sits in the south western corner of Lake Victoria, an hour’s flight from the Serengeti and a world away from it: two hundred and forty square kilometres of dense evergreen forest and papyrus shoreline, the largest island national park in Africa, and home to a chimpanzee population descended from sixteen animals rescued from European zoos and released here in the 1960s. There is one camp on the whole island.
The journey opens with seven nights of Serengeti, split across two sectors that are deliberately not the busy ones. Four in the central and southern kopje country, where granite outcrops rise from grassland and the guiding is about reading a landscape rather than following a circuit. Three in the Western Corridor, following the Grumeti River towards the lake riverine forest, black and white colobus, enormous crocodile in the river pools, and, between roughly May and July, the migration moving through on its way north. The Western Corridor is the least visited part of the main Serengeti and it points, geographically and ecologically, straight at Rubondo.
Then a short flight west and everything changes. Rubondo is trekked on foot through humid forest, explored by boat along a shoreline of papyrus and fig, fished for Nile perch, walked for sitatunga and bushbuck, and largely spent doing very little in a way that the mainland does not allow. Six nights is not an indulgence here chimpanzee habituation on Rubondo is an ongoing process rather than a one hour permit, and the group takes time to find and more time to stay with. It is the only place in Tanzania where you can be part of that work rather than a spectator at it.

Scheduled Light Aircraft Flights: USD 1,300 per person quoted in addition. Optional Forest Fly Camping Night: USD 400 per person. Optional Hot Air Balloon Safari: USD 599 per person. Rates are based on two travellers sharing. Rubondo Island Camp is the only accommodation in the national park, and both tiers of this journey use it; the difference between the tiers lies in the Serengeti properties and the room category on the island. Chimpanzee habituation carries a minimum age requirement and involves demanding walking in humid forest, which we discuss with you at the time of quotation.
