Experience
THE GREAT WILDEBEEST MIGRATION
The moment
Built to become more than an add-on.
Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebra, and countless gazelle
move across the Serengeti and Mara ecosystem in an endless cycle driven by rainfall and the search for fresh grazing.
It is the largest overland wildlife movement on Earth, a spectacle that unfolds across different regions and seasons,
each offering its own extraordinary moments.
A Year-Round Phenomenon
The Great Migration is not a single event but a continuous journey that shifts across the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year.
From the calving season on the southern Serengeti plains between January and March, where thousands of calves
are born each day under the watchful eyes of predators, to the dramatic river crossings of the Grumeti River
between June and July and the Mara River from July through October, the Migration constantly evolves.
Calving Season in the South
Between December and March, the Ndutu area and southern Serengeti plains come alive with new life.
The grass is lush, the herds are concentrated, and predator activity is at its peak.
This quieter yet powerful phase offers some of the most remarkable wildlife viewing anywhere in Africa,
with daily births and constant interactions between predators and prey.
The Drama of River Crossings
For many travellers, the highlight of the Migration is witnessing a river crossing.
Between July and October, the northern Serengeti becomes the stage for one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles,
as herds plunge into crocodile-filled waters in a desperate attempt to reach the other side.
These moments are unpredictable, intense, and unforgettable.
Choosing the Right Time
The best time to experience the Migration depends on what you want to see.
- River crossings: Northern Serengeti (July to October)
- Calving season: Ndutu & southern plains (December to March)
- Green season beauty: Lush landscapes and fewer crowds
Positioning Matters
The key to experiencing the Migration is being in the right place at the right time.
We position our guests at carefully selected camps, including mobile camps that follow the herds,
ensuring you are never far from the action.
An Unforgettable Experience
Whether you witness a crossing, a hunt, or simply the quiet sweep of a million animals stretching to the horizon,
the Great Migration is nature at its most powerful and humbling.
